ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a resident of Holley, New York.  Having taught art in Holley for thirty-one years, I am now enjoying retirement.  A good part of my days are spent practicing what I preached as a teacher.

My wife, Annette, and I have four daughters.  The youngest is a senior at Houghton College.

Much of my subjects are of local sites—some that most do not see.  Do you recognize any of these landscapes? Some of these outdoor scenes were plein aire paintings.

I love the spontaneity and challenge of painting with constantly changing light.  The feeling is hard to capture from a photograph.  The still life paintings allow me to think more about composition.

Red Barn an oil painting by Howard Tony BarryI would describe my painting style as realistic.  Some artists who have influenced my work are Cezanne and the modern movement, Sargent for his brushwork, and Gruppe for his use of color.

While I have spent most of my career as a teacher, I still feel I have a lot to learn about painting and would appreciate your comments.
